Writing, Editing, and Technical Communication

The field of written communication encompasses both the creative and the functional, from poetry, novels, and screenplays to essays, product manuals, and website content. In addition, the craft of editing and the business of publishing are crucial to the process of delivering, clear, polished writing to varied audiences. UC Berkeley Extension's courses in writing give you opportunities to receive encouragement, direction, and feedback on your work. Our courses in editing, publishing, and technical communication help prepare you to join or advance in these exciting and challenging fields and help you meet industry's need for engaging, effective communication.

New This Summer

One-to-One Writing Critique
If you are a writer interested in receiving individual feedback on a short story or other prose work of fiction or nonfiction, consider the Writing Program's One to One Writing Critique. Submit a work to an instructor for review and then meet with the instructor for a critique session tailored specifically to your work in progress. You can sign up for a one-time session or the four-meeting, One to One Writing Intensive. Sessions are conducted by Deborah Lichtman, program adviser to the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program in Writing. Especially suited for writers who seek to revise a work for publication or to complete a portfolio for submission to a writing program. New! Understanding the Graphic Novel emphasizes understanding the genre as a reader, which is a necessary first step towards creating a graphic novel.


New! Writing Your Life Through Verse explores ways to generate an experience through poetry, with an emphasis on language, form and the lyrical mode.


New! Intended for working editors and students enrolled in the Professional Sequence in Editing program, Why Engineers and Programmers Need Sentence Jockeys: A One-Day Workshop on Technical Documentation focuses on how editors can leverage their training and experience to produce and improve documentation and online content with an overview of documents commonly produced in software, hardware, and green technology companies.


New! Writing the Short Form: Flash Fiction, Prose Poetry, and Prose Fiction is designed for experienced writers to explore various forms of flash fiction, including the short-short story, the compressed narrative, and the fable. Writing assignments emphasize finding forms best suited to your individual interests, voice, and style.


New! Writing the First-Person Essay teaches three forms of the first-person essay: portrait, story, and reflection, allowing you to embrace almost every topic, from the trials of parenthood to the courage of turtles, and every mode from a two-paragraph journal entry to a book.

Weekend Writer's Retreat provides the stimulation and concentration you need as you explore writing activities that connect you to your own passion and voice an experiment with exercises that help push your writing to the next level. The weekend includes lecture, discussion, guided writing exercises and readings by guest writers.
