Designed with the working professional in mind, this year-long program focuses on developing the mandated knowledge needed by architects, designers, builders, developers, project managers, and other decision makers who want to be leaders in the sustainable, cradle-to-cradle revolution now in progress. Our students learn from industry professionals to build a comprehensive portfolio and advance in the field.
All of the essential ecosystems that create and support life on our planet, including the human population, are being severely compromised. If we understand our current ecological dilemma as primarily a design failure of the first industrial revolution, the need for another industrial revolution based on new, sustainable design principles is clear. Sustainable design involves applying the forms and patterns of natural living systems to the creation of built environments and consumer products so that human activity sustains without harm and even regenerates the living systems of which we are a part.
The Council for Interior Design Accreditation (formerly FIDER), in its Professional Standards
for the interior design profession, requires programs to provide learning experiences that
address "environmental ethics and the role of sustainability in the practice of interior
design." As one of the only schools to offer an in-depth program in sustainable design,
UC Berkeley Extension is among the leaders in the field.
The professional program consists of two 10-week core curriculum courses, Principles of Sustainable Design X400.6 and Practical Applications of Sustainable Design, and four six-week electives from a wide range of choices, for a total of eight semester units.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for the Professional Program in Sustainable Design, but a
bachelor's degree is recommended.
Program Structure and Requirements
The Professional Program in Sustainable Design requires the completion of two core courses and four electives. There are two required core courses for a total of 4 semester
