With the demographic trend toward an aging population, the field of personal financial
planning is expected to grow more rapidly than ever as more and more people begin to plan for
their retirement. UC Berkeley Extension's Professional Sequence in Personal Financial Planning provides an
academic path to the profession and courses that pave the way to take the CFP® Certification
Examination.
Prerequisites
Prerequisites apply for all personal financial planning courses. Students should possess a
minimum of a bachelor's degree and at least two years of professional experience in a financial
services field.
If you do not meet these prerequisites but possess comparable skills, you
may request advance approval to enroll by contacting the program office in writing at Personal
Financial Planning, UC Berkeley Extension-BTE, 1995 University Ave., Suite 110,

We recommend that you take
Basic Financial Mathematics and Financial Spreadsheets
before enrolling in
Survey of Personal Financial Planning, if you don't have experience using
financial calculators.
Requirements
A total of 16 semester units must be completed to earn the certificate: seven required courses (14
semester units) and one elective course (2 semester units). All coursework must be completed
within four years with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and no grade lower than C with the
exception of the
Survey of Personal Financial Planning
and Personal Financial Planning Practicum
courses, which must be completed with grades of B or higher. Please

Registration procedure
Students should apply to be admitted to the program after completing the survey course with a
grade of B (3.0) or better.
We recommend that you register for the professional sequence before you begin your third course in the program. To register, please (1) complete and submit the
Program Registration Form or (2) print out and complete the form at
www.unex.berkeley.edu/cert/certproginfo.html. Mail or fax it as it indicates, and include the nonrefundable registration fee. Program registration cannot be taken by phone.
Requirements may be updated based on new developments in the field of study; we recommend completing the program in a timely fashion. Please call (510) 642-4231 for details
concerning the application process.
Students not interested in completing our Personal Financial
Planning program but who would like to enroll in one or more of our courses can do so by contacting our
registration office by phone, fax, or e-mail; however, should you later decide to enroll in the
program, you must contact the department to receive official acceptance into the program and to
request a transfer of courses taken prior to enrolling in the program to apply toward the
professional sequence.
Substitution Requests
Students are not able to substitute previous coursework into this program or use courses from other institutions in completion of this program.
Refunds, Withdrawals and Cancellations
For all refund, withdrawal or cancellation issues, please refer to

Note: Work obligations do not qualify as an exception in terms of the refund policy.
Completing the program
Upon completion of the final course, students must contact the department to provide
notification of their completion. Once grades and course completion have been verified,
the certificate request process will be initiated and the CFP Board will be notified of the student's
eligibility to take the national exam.
CFP Board registered
The Professional Sequence in Personal Financial Planning is registered with the Certified Financial
Planner Board of Standards, Inc. This registration allows those who have successfully completed
the UC Berkeley Extension program and who wish to obtain the CFP®
certification to take the national CFP Certification Examination. Coursework is designed to
cover 101 topics tested on the certification examination.

TM"are federally
registered marks of the Certified Financial
Planner Board of Standards.
UC Berkeley Extension does not certify individuals to use the CFP® and
Certified Financial Planner
TM marks. CFP
certification is granted only by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards to those
persons who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as this CFP
Board-Registered Program, have met its ethics, experience, and examination requirements.
