Personal Financial Planning

(EDP 302836)

With the demographic trend toward an aging population, the field of personal financial planning is expected to grow more rapidly than ever as more and more people begin to plan for their retirement. UC Berkeley Extension's Professional Sequence in Personal Financial Planning provides an academic path to the profession and courses that pave the way to take the CFP® Certification Examination.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites apply for all personal financial planning courses. Students should possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree and at least two years of professional experience in a financial services field. If you do not meet these prerequisites but possess comparable skills, you may request advance approval to enroll by contacting the program office in writing at Personal Financial Planning, UC Berkeley Extension-BTE, 1995 University Ave., Suite 110, Berkeley, CA 94704-7000; by phone at (510) 643-0968; or by fax at (510) 642-6027. Please provide a brief description of relevant experience, including duration and extent, along with your contact information.

For all other registration matters, please call (510) 642-4111.

We recommend that you take Basic Financial Mathematics and Financial Spreadsheets before enrolling in Survey of Personal Financial Planning, if you don't have experience using financial calculators.

Requirements

A total of 16 semester units must be completed to earn the certificate: seven required courses (14 semester units) and one elective course (2 semester units). All coursework must be completed within four years with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and no grade lower than C with the exception of the Survey of Personal Financial Planning and Personal Financial Planning Practicum courses, which must be completed with grades of B or higher. Please call (510) 643-0968 to verify your completion.

Mail or fax it as it indicates, and include the nonrefundable registration fee. Program registration cannot be taken by phone.

Students not interested in completing our Personal Financial Planning program but who would like to enroll in one or more of our courses can do so by contacting our registration office by phone, fax, or e-mail; however, should you later decide to enroll in the program, you must contact the department to receive official acceptance into the program and to request a transfer of courses taken prior to enrolling in the program to apply toward the professional sequence.

Completing the program

Upon completion of the final course, students must contact the department to provide notification of their completion. Once grades and course completion have been verified, the certificate request process will be initiated and the CFP Board will be notified of the student's eligibility to take the national exam.
