Discontinuation Notice for the Professional Sequence in Computer Programming

This professional sequence is being phased out. If you are currently enrolled in the program, you must complete all coursework by the end of Spring 2009. If you are working toward completion of the courses within this program, please consult with the director regarding course substitutions to complete the program. No further applications for entry into this program will be accepted. Related stand-alone courses in this area may continue to be offered from term to term. For all questions, call (510) 642-4151 or e-mail course@unex.berkeley.edu.

This sequence provides the introductory tools and knowledge to get started as a professional programmer. You learn how to design elegant code, how to think like an effective programmer, and the basics of hardware and software. In addition, you receive an introduction to one of the most widely used and adapted programming languages, Java.

The professional sequence comprises three 2-unit/ 30-hour courses for a total of 90 hours. All coursework must be completed within two years with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and no grade lower than a C in any course.

We recommend taking the courses in the following sequence:

Introduction to Computer Programming Logic and Design X440.3

First Course in Java X429.9

Introduction to Data Structures Using Java X450.1

On successful completion of all three courses, you are awarded a certificate of completion from UC Berkeley Extension.
