As the U.S. population ages, the number of age-related morbidities will increase and the need for knowledgeable health, social service, and mental health professionals will continue to grow. This Professional Program in Aging and Mental Health includes a series of CEU workshops offered by leading researchers and clinicians in the Bay Area. A certificate of completion will be awarded to participants who meet all the requirements of the program.
Requirements
The program consists of two required workshops: Assessment and Treatment of Mental Illness in Older Adults (1.2 ceu) offered fall term, and a
Clinical Case Seminar on Aging and Mental Health (1.2 ceu) offered in summer, plus 36 hours of electives from the series of workshops offered during the year. The minimum number of hours to earn a certificate of completion is 60 hours. Substitutions and waivers are not allowed. This program is primarily intended for licensed clinicians (Ph.D.s, LCSWs, MFTs, RNs, and psychologists) who work with the elderly and their families.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to fill out a formal application to either enter the program or receive a certificate on completion?
No. In order to begin the program, simply enroll in your first workshop and continue taking them each term until you have completed the 60 hours of coursework. Be sure to indicate on the Extension course roster that you wish to receive CE credit for the course. This will trigger a record of your attendance. When you have completed the program, please call (510) 643-3883 to request your certificate.
How does The Professional Program in Aging and Mental Health prepare professionals?
Workshops in this program provide an update on Aging and Mental Health research and counseling tools used in a variety of settings. Courses are aimed at helping professionals stay current in the field of Aging and Mental Health and become better clinicians in their work with older adults and their families.
What are the benefits of completing the program?
Participants will gain an understanding of current issues in the field of Aging and Mental Health and will be better able to make assessments, informed referrals, etc. Participants also are able to earn continuing education units and focus their course of study in this important field of clinical work.
Who is eligible to take the workshops in this program?
Although there are no specific degrees or course requirements for this series of workshops, it is primarily intended for mental health clinicians, nurses, and social services professionals who have a graduate degree in the field and are licensed psychologists, clinical social workers, or marriage and family therapists. Psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses, as well as a range of professionals working in long-term care settings, may also take workshops in this program.
How many workshops will I need to take in order to earn a certificate?
The minimum number of hours to earn a certificate is 60 hours. There are two twelve-hour required workshops and 36 hours of electives required to complete the program.
How long does it take to complete the program?
The program can be completed at your own pace. It will take a minimum of three semesters to complete the program; however, the courses can be taken over the course of several years. Students may take up to 5 years to complete the program and earn a certificate.
How much does it cost to complete the program?
The approximate cost of the program is $1,800. Each workshop is paid for separately at the time of enrollment. Because the course fees may vary from semester to semester, this is only an estimate.
Should the workshops be taken in a particular order?
Workshops may be taken in any order; however, it is recommended that you take the required Assessment and Treatment of Mental Illness in Older Adults first, and as you near the end the program, take the Clinical Case Seminar on Aging and Mental Health workshop.
Where are the workshops held? On what days are the workshops held?
Workshops are scheduled both in Berkeley and in San Francisco, and are usually held on a Friday or Saturday (please check schedule each semester for exact time and location).
Once I obtain a certificate upon completion of the program, how will this affect my career and income?
This program allows clinicians to focus their learning in this specialized area of practice and list the completion of this certificate program from UC Berkeley Extension on their resume and in job applications. Participants in this program are able to earn 6.0 ceus (60 hours of continuing education credit) and specialize their professional development work in the area of Aging and Mental Health treatment.
