Free public events are part of how UC Berkeley Extension fulfills its mission to bring the educational excellence of UC Berkeley to the community. A variety of programs this summer, including a number of free lectures, gives the public a chance to learn about a spectrum of timely issues and classical concepts.
Space is limited. To reserve seats, call (510) 642-4111 and refer to the EDP number associated with the program. Enrollment for all summer 2008 courses and programs opens April 14.
Green Marketing: The Art of Doing Well by Doing Good
After completion of this course, students will be able to intelligently discuss the various influences and stages of the Organic School, and critically analyze the various patterns, geometries, and motifs taken from nature. They will find inspiration for their own work through the discussions, and be inspired to seek out alternatives from viewing the richly illustrated lecture. Students should bring the following to class: samples of their firm’s promotional literature, business card and résumé; a one-page typed answer to the questions “What does ‘sustainable’ mean to me?” and “What do I want to be doing in 2010?” Also, students should wear comfortable clothing and bring lunch and snacks.

Body Conscious Design
This three-hour free workshop involves direct experience of designing from the point of view of the body. Somatics (a combination of sensory, psychological, and cultural awareness) and experiential anatomy are briefly explained, and then experienced through a carefully crafted sequence of exercises. Simple before-and-after drawings (no skill required!) done in class, first in ordinary rational thinking, and second in a state of “body consciousness,” demonstrate the power of direct experience for design at all scales from object to building to landscape and to design pedagogy. Group discussion about design implications concludes the workshop.
Galen Cranz, Ph.D., professor of architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, sociologist, author of The Chair: Rethinking Culture, Body and Design and a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique, teaches "body conscious design" regularly at Berkeley and occasionally elsewhere nationally and internationally.
Jader Tolja, M.D., psychotherapist and professor at Department of Landscape Architecture, Polytechnic University of Milan, teaches Body Conscious Design at the Domus Academy in the master's program in interior and living design. He is the author of i>Bodythinking.
