New Noon Lecture Series, Free Films, The Presidency, Sustainability, Future of Radio, Cal Day

Free public lectures and other events are part of how UC Berkeley Extension fulfills its mission to bring the educational excellence of UC Berkeley to the community. A variety of programs this winter and spring give the public a chance to learn about a spectrum of timely issues.

Ecocity Building for a New Day

What is an ecological city? What are the sustainable development strategies for the low-energy, ecocity model as we strive to move away from the current high-energy auto-city? Come explore a cooperative framework for how best we can build a future taking into account land uses, restoration of nature, and integration of natural design. We will focus on the overall strategies for reshaping the city for sustainability and long-term health of nature and civilization.

From Newscast to Podcast: The Future of Radio Journalism
A Lecture by Robert Siegel, Host of NPR's All Things Considered

Millions of Americans get their news from public radio. But how long will they continue to do so? What happens to radio in the age of the iPod? And what new technologies will roil the airwaves in the future? Come hear veteran public radio journalist Robert Siegel reflect on the state of the medium he loves. Siegel will discuss trends in news and broadcasting and their impact on the kind of radio journalism he practices.

To inaugurate the new sustainable design certificate program, Extension is offering free screenings of these ecology films: William McDonough's The Next Revolution; the award-winning oil film, The End of Suburbia; and the ground-breaking toxics film, Blue Vinyl.
