FoodQuake: A Weekend of San Francisco Food and Food Culture

From Friday, June 9, to Sunday, June 11, a unique weekend course from UC Berkeley Extension will give Bay Area foodies a chance to explore the area’s gastronomic delights with an all-star collection of culinary experts. The three days of sampling, lectures, tours and writing trace developments in California food culture from sustainable agriculture, farmers markets and the organics movement to trend-setting restaurants, food writers and more.

Speakers include food and wine maven Narsai David; award-winning author and MFK Fisher biographer Jeannette Ferrary; noted food writers Joyce Goldstein, Fran Gage, Amanda Berne and Janet Fletcher; as well as restaurateurs Michael Wild and Larry Goldman (BayWolf), Mark McLeod (Enrico’s and Downtown) and Patricia Untermann (Hayes Street Grill).

The theme for Friday, scheduled for 4-7 pm at UC Berkeley Extension’s South of Market Center, is “Social and Political Influences on Food in the Bay Area and Beyond.” Saturday’s session, which meets at the SOMA Center from 9 am to 5 pm, focuses on “Personal and Regional Food Histories.” Sunday, participants meet at the San Francisco Ferry Building farmers’ market for an informative tour and discussion billed as “From Market to Table.” A wine and cheese reception is included on Friday, as are lunches on Saturday and Sunday.

Founded in 1891, UC Berkeley Extension is the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley. Today, Extension offers 2,000 courses each year, including online courses, along with more than 30 certificate programs and customized on-site corporate training.
