Message Board Troubleshooting Tips
Below are the most common issues which prevent users from accessing the message board:
Firewall
Your firewall may be denying you access to the classroom message board. Be sure that your firewall provides access to port 8080 (required for message board access).
TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS:
- Speak to your network administrator.
Keystroke Errors
Keystroke errors fall under the category of user error. In our minds, we may be certain we are typing the correct username/password combination, but our fingers have something entirely different in mind. Since many passwords are alphanumeric, you may wish to pay careful attention to the distinction between the numeral one, and lower-case letter "L"; the numeral two, and the letter "Z"; and the numeral zero, and the letter "O".
TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS:
- Carefully re-type the username/password
- Submit a request for lost password. Your password will be sent by e-mail. To prevent the possibility of keystroke errors, cut & paste the password to the required field.
Browser Cache
Under normal circumstances, when you go to a Web page, your Web browser stores a copy of the page on your hard drive. These files are referred to as cache or temporary files. The cache of pages allows the browser to display pages faster the second time you go to the page. However, browser cache sometimes interferes with your ability to login to the classroom or message board.
TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer: Adjust Cache Settings
Tools menu > Internet Options > General tab > Temporary Internet Files > Settings > Check For Newer Versions of Stored Pages > Automatically
- Microsoft Internet Explorer: Clear Browser Cache
Tools menu > Internet Options > General tab > Temporary Internet Files > Delete Files
- Netscape: Adjust Cache Settings
Edit menu > Preferences > Category: Advanced (expand menu selection) > Cache > Document In Cache Is Compared To Document On Network: Every Time OR When Page Is Out of Date.
- Netscape: Clear Browser Cache
Edit menu > Preferences > Category: Advanced (expand menu selection) > Cache > Clear Memory Cache & Clear Disk Cache
- Mozilla Firefox: Clear Browser Cache
Tools menu > Options > Privacy tab > Cache > Clear Cache Now
Proxy Servers
A proxy server sits between your Web browser and the website you are attempting to reach. It intercepts all requests to determine whether it can fulfill the requests itself. If not, it forwards the request to the real server. Proxy servers have two main purposes: improve performance and filter requests.
If you are using a proxy server, you may not be viewing the most up-to-date web pages available. While this is generally OK for classroom content, it can create issues when attempting to access the message board.
TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS:
- Speak to your network administrator.
