College of Engineering Students

Every year, UC Berkeley's College of Engineering (COE) accepts a small number of students for the spring semester, and those students also have the opportunity to participate in the Fall Program for Freshmen (FPF). COE students can benefit from FPF courses by working toward their graduation requirements for UC Berkeley.

While attending FPF, you can satisfy the following requirements:

FPF for COE Students

For COE students, FPF academic requirements and policies are somewhat different than for most FPF students, who will attend UC Berkeley's College of Letters and Science (L&S) in the spring. Here are a few of the exceptions.

Reading & Composition Requirement—Only the first half of the Reading & Composition requirement can be fulfilled with an Advanced Placement (AP) test. Once admitted to the College of Engineering, only applicable courses taken at UC Berkeley or FPF with a grade of C- or higher will satisfy the COE Reading & Composition requirement.

Math Requirement—In exceptional cases, COE students may take math coursework not offered by FPF*. To do so, you must submit a written request, addressed to the FPF Student Affairs Officer, explaining why you must take a course outside FPF in the fall semester. You may e-mail us at or fax your request to (510) 643-1976. You will receive an answer and follow-up instructions shortly before classes begin.

* FPF can no longer consider petitions for Concurrent Enrollment in on-campus Math courses for Fall 2008. Please review our News & Updates page for more information.
