Education

UC Berkeley Extension education courses, professional programs, and credential programs provide key teaching methods and skills for use in a wide variety of educational and training settings. Teachers and trainers at all levels have the opportunity to learn from Extension’s excellent instructors who are also practitioners. Many of our courses are also of value to non-teachers looking for insights into education-related topics such as college planning and the psychology of learning.

Teaching Credential Programs in Adult Education and Career and Technical Education are available.

Become a Professional Teacher

UC Berkeley Extension offers several programs designed for those who want to enter the teaching profession: Adult Education and Instruction, Vocational Education, and Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language. Each program varies widely in terms of prerequisites, time required to complete, and the subject matter and type of educational setting in which you will be qualified to teach. These professional programs can also be applied toward earning a California teaching credential.

Earn a California Teaching Credential

You can greatly expand your career options in adult or vocational education by becoming a fully credentialed California teacher. After completing one of our professional programs, take two to five additional courses and qualify for the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Credential or the Adult Education Credential.

Professional Advancement for Teachers

From website design to second language acquisition to math-teaching methods, Extension offers courses and programs that address the challenges professional educators face in their classrooms every day. Choose from innovative professional growth courses and certificate programs in CTEL/CLAD, Technology in Education, Teaching ESL, Teaching Math, or College Admissions Advising.

Clear Your Preliminary Credential

For teachers who need to complete, or "clear," their preliminary credential UC Berkeley Extension offers all the required courses and schedules them for completion in one year. If you currently hold a preliminary California Credential in Multiple Subjects, Special Education Single Subject, Adult Education, or Vocational Education, refer to your preliminary credential document for the specific courses you need to clear your credential.

Become a College Admissions and Career Adviser

Both career changers and professional educators can learn the technical skills necessary to advise students in the college admissions process or toward career fulfillment. UC Berkeley Extension offers the only Certificate Program in College Admissions and Career Planning in the Bay Area. Work in an academic setting or as a private consultant.
