How to Apply


A complete application must include the following original documents:

Once we receive your application, it will be reviewed by our registration staff. If your application is complete, it will be submitted to our Academic Review Committee for a final decision about your acceptance. Once you have been accepted into an International Diploma Program, your acceptance documents will be sent to you by international courier. The full review process generally takes two weeks.

Statement of Purpose and Background
Please write a brief (maximum 350 words) statement explaining your interest in the proposed field of study and your previous background and interest in the field. Be sure to:


Financial Statement and Certification, and translation if applicable, dated within 90 days of your application
In order to receive your acceptance documents, you must demonstrate that sufficient financial resources will be available to you while studying in the United States. Please use the chart below to estimate your total expenses.

*Tuition is the only payment made to UC Berkeley Extension. All fees are subject to change without notice.

You may provide financial certification in one of two ways:
(1) complete the Financial Statement and Certification section of the Enrollment Application or
(2) submit a letter from a bank (please include a translation if applicable). If you have a sponsor, please clearly indicate your relationship to the sponsor on the Enrollment Application.

Note: If family members will be accompanying you to the United States, you must add $600 per month for your spouse and/or $400 per month for each child to your estimated expenses (figures in U.S. dollars).

Proof of English language proficiency
You must document that you have sufficient English fluency. This documentation may take several forms:

a. English language tests: achieve the minimum score or better on one of the tests listed below. Your test score must be official and no more than two years old.

Note: IDP will no longer accept the TOEIC Exam as proof of language proficiency as of November 20, 2009.
TOEFL*: 213 computer- based, 550 paper-based, or 79 Internet-based (iBT)
TOEIC: 760
IELTS: 6.5
Cambridge Proficiency Exam: Pass
Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English: Pass

All students are encouraged to take one of the above-mentioned language tests.

*All International TOEFL scores are acceptable, but Institutional TOEFL scores are only accepted from our recommended English providers.

b. Past academic performance: Exceptions may be made on an individual basis for applicants who have completed a degree at a university in an English-speaking country. Applicants may submit their academic transcripts as proof of sufficient English fluency. Academic transcripts must indicate completion of the degree. All such materials must be in English.

c. Native English-speaking status: Applicants who are citizens of English-speaking nations need only include a copy of their valid passport.

Transcripts and Copy of Diploma
You must have completed at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent. Please submit your official transcripts showing award of a bachelor’s or higher degree. Each transcript or mark sheet must contain a complete record of studies at the institution from which it is issued and the marks earned in each subject.

A significant amount of professional experience may be substituted for this requirement. If you do not have a bachelor’s degree but do have specific work experience, please submit a copy of your résumé and a cover letter explaining your background.

Application fee
You must submit a nonrefundable application fee of $100 in order for your application to be considered. Your application will not be reviewed without this fee. Please include your credit card number, expiration date, and approval signature with your application. You may also pay by money order or bank draft payable to UC Regents. The draft must be drawn on an account held at a U.S. bank or a U.S. branch of an international bank.
