Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Visual Arts

This exciting curriculum provides the rigorous studio practice and conceptual/art-historical framework necessary to develop a portfolio of work for application to graduate programs in fine art. Designed for students who have completed an undergraduate degree with a non-art major, this program offers a solid, Berkeley-quality education in the visual arts that can be completed on a part-time or full-time basis. It is also perfect for professionals already working in the arts who want to formalize their training, or for people interested in making a career change that requires a strong visual arts background. Our students learn from industry professionals to build a comprehensive portfolio and advance in the field.

The curriculum consists of twelve courses (24 units), including four required theory/critique courses (8 units) designed to develop creative and conceptual thinking, two visual art history courses (4 units) that function to integrate issues of contemporary art within a historical context, and six visual arts electives (12 units) chosen from a wide array of studio courses in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and film/video media. The range of electives available offers the opportunity to focus on a specific concentration or span disciplines, and to develop the technical and perceptual skills needed to grow artistically and create an independent body of work.

Application Procedure
Apply for the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Visual Arts by filling out
the application and submitting it with the nonrefundable application fee.
Send an official transcript of your bachelor's degree to: Visual Arts Certificate, UC Berkeley Extension, 1995 University Ave., Suite 110, Berkeley, CA 94704-7000.
Receive the certificate by completing all required and elective courses for
academic credit with a grade of C or better. The curriculum can be completed within one year
by attending full time or in two years by attending part time. Five years is the maximum
expected completion time. Contact the program office when you have completed the curriculum
to have your records reviewed and the certificate awarded.
