Please note: the Certificate in Human Resource Management is currently under review for revisions which may take effect beginning fall 2008 term. If you have already paid your certificate registration fee of $100, you may choose to continue with the current requirements, or you may choose to complete the proposed new requirements. If you have already taken some classes, but have not yet enrolled, you may choose to enroll now and continue with the current requirements, or you may choose to wait to enroll until fall term and be held to the proposed new requirements. The human resource management function has evolved into a wide range of complex responsibilities and strategic activities that are central to achieving a desired organizational climate or culture and critical to the success of an organization. This certificate program is designed to help human resource professionals develop the knowledge, methods, and skills necessary to meet the challenges of today's changing workplace and workforce.

The Certificate Program in Human Resource Management prepares you to lead the strategic deployment of human capital in today's corporations, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and small businesses.

Who Will Benefit

The Human Resource Management program is intended for current HR professionals and those who wish to enter the field.

Requirements

This certificate program consists of 11 semester units of required courses and 3 semester units of elective courses, for a total of 14 semester units.

Elective courses

Any UC Berkeley Extension course offered in Business and Management may be taken for elective credit. Candidates need a total of 3 semester units in electives.

Prerequisites for Admission

There are no prerequisites for the certificate programs in human resources, but a bachelor's degree is recommended.

How to Begin

We recommend starting the Certificate Program in Human Resource Management with Management of Human Resources X450.1.

Registration Procedure

We recommend that you register for the certificate program before you begin your second course in the program. To register, please (1) complete and submit the Program Registration Form or (2) print out and complete the form at www.unex.berkeley.edu/info/cert.php. Mail or fax it as it indicates, and include the nonrefundable registration fee. Certificate registration cannot be taken by phone.

Requirements may be updated based on new developments in the field of study; we recommend completing the program in a timely fashion.

Grading policy

All courses must be taken for a letter grade. A grade point average of 2.5 is required in order to earn the certificate, and each course must be completed with a grade of C or better. If you maintain a 3.5 grade point average you will be awarded a Certificate with Distinction.

Substitution of courses

Certificate candidates may petition to substitute up to two courses taken at other institutions for certificate requirements. The substituted course must be equivalent in subject matter and academic credit. A substituted course must have been taken during the past five years with a grade of B or better and must be supported by an official transcript and course description. Substitutions must be approved in writing by UC Berkeley Extension; contact the program office for guidelines at (510) 642-4231 or .

Time to complete the program

You are expected to complete the course requirements for the certificate within five years. Please notify us when you finish your final course. We will then review your transcript, and after verifying completion of all coursework and requirements, we will award your certificate.
