Financial professionals lead their organizations' efforts to raise capital, to invest funds, to manage assets, and to generate returns for providers of capital.

The UC Berkeley Extension Certificate Program in Finance is an integrated sequence of courses that gives students a broad, thorough, and up-to-date foundation in finance and the practical tools needed to thrive as effective financial or investment managers or analysts. The program uses materials and techniques developed in the field and based on accepted financial management principles to give students real-world knowledge and skills that can be applied immediately.

The certificate program is intended to help students

Students customize the program to meet their own objectives by choosing to specialize in either corporate finance or investment management.

Program requirements

The finance certificate curriculum consists of four required core courses, three required specialization courses, and one elective course, for a total of 8 courses, 16 semester units, and 240 hours of instruction.

Prerequisites

In order to commence the program you must have successfully completed (a) one course in financial accounting (such as Introduction to Financial Accounting XB102A), and (b) one course in economics (such as Essentials of Economics X402.8, Introduction to Microeconomics X2, or Introduction to Macroeconomics X3). In addition, proficiency with computer spreadsheets is highly recommended.

To begin the certificate program

After meeting the prerequisites, students commence the program by enrolling in Basic Corporate Finance X430.1. We recommend that you also complete the one-day workshop Basic Financial Mathematics and Financial Spreadsheets during the first semester of the program.

Registration Procedure

We recommend that you register for the certificate program before you begin your third course in the program. To register, please (1) complete and submit the Program Registration Form or (2) print out and complete the form at www.unex.berkeley.edu/info/cert.php. Mail or fax it as it indicates, and include the nonrefundable registration fee. Certificate registration cannot be taken by phone.

Requirements may be updated based on new developments in the field of study; we recommend completing the program in a timely fashion.

Your elective must total at least 2 semester units in business administration. Approved finance electives include:

Substitution of courses

Certificate candidates may petition to substitute up to two courses taken at another institution toward certificate requirements. The substituted course(s) must be equivalent in subject matter and credit and must have been completed within the past five years with a grade of B or higher at an accredited college or university. At least 12 of the required semester units must be taken through UC Berkeley Extension. Substitutions must be approved in writing by UC Berkeley Extension; contact the program office for guidelines.

Further information

A certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete all 16 units with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher. Students working toward completion of the certificate program must enroll for credit in those courses offering academic credit and must request a letter grade. Certificate requirements must be completed within five years of enrollment in the first required course. All credit courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher. A Certificate "with distinction" will be awarded to those who complete the program with a UC Berkeley Extension GPA of 3.5 or higher.
