Facilities Management

(EDP 152231)

This program provides the knowledge, tools, and skills needed for successful facilities management along with a thorough understanding of and practical experience in the critical business decision-making process of the facility manager.

Requirements

The curriculum consists of eight (8) required courses for a total of 18 units and 270 instructional hours. For program information and guidelines, please e-mail or call (510) 642-4231.

Please note that you may take as many individual courses as you wish without enrolling in the full certificate program.

Required courses

We recommend taking these courses in the following sequence:

Substitution of courses

Certificate candidates may substitute up to two courses taken at another institution for certificate requirements. The substituted course(s) must be equivalent in subject matter and academic credit and must be offered by an accredited college or university. The substituted course(s) must have been taken during the past five years with a grade of B or better and must be supported by an official transcript. Substitutions must be approved in writing by UC Berkeley Extension; e-mail the program office for guidelines.

Further study

To begin the certificate program

Begin the program with Introduction to Facilities Management X420. You do not need to sign up for the certificate program to enroll in certificate courses.

Registration Procedure

We recommend that you register for the certificate program before you begin your third course in the program. To register, please (1) complete and submit the Program Registration Form or (2) print out and complete the form at www.unex.berkeley.edu/info/cert.php. Mail or fax it as it indicates, and include the nonrefundable registration fee. Certificate registration cannot be taken by phone.

Requirements may be updated based on new developments in the field of study; we recommend completing the program in a timely fashion.

Grading policy

All courses must be taken for a letter grade. A grade point average of 2.5 is required in order to earn the certificate, and each course must be completed with a grade of C or better. If you maintain a 3.5 grade point average you will be awarded a Certificate with Distinction.

Time to complete the program

You are expected to complete the course requirements for the certificate within five years of taking Introduction to Facilities Management X420. Please notify us via e-mail when you receive your final grade report. After verifying completion of all coursework and requirements, we will award your certificate.

IFMA Recognition and Professional Credentials

As an International Facility Management Association (IFMA) recognized program, participants acquire a body of knowledge consistent with IFMA's underlying principles of facility management.

Students can prepare for one of the following IFMA designations:

Certified Facility Manager

The Certified Facility Manager (CFM) designation is IFMA’s competency-based certification recognizing proficiency in all areas of facility management. UC Berkeley Extension certificate students can achieve the educational requirements which will enable them to sit for the IFMA CFM exam.

Once certified IFMA’s CFMs can earn 20 maintenance points per UC Berkeley Extension course to a maximum of 60 points.

Facility Management Professional
The Facility Management Professional (FMP) designation is IFMA’s entry-level, knowledge-based credential geared towards facility managers with less than five years of experience. UC Berkeley Extension students who successfully complete the following four courses with a grade of B or above can apply directly to IFMA and receive the FMP designation.
