Earn your CLAD certificate through CTEL coursework before the next school year begins. The only six-week, classroom-based curriculum in the Bay Area for this state mandated certification.

CLAD Through CTEL Certification Program


UC Berkeley Extension’s CLAD Through CTEL certificate program offers a sequence of classroom courses expected to be approved in summer 2009 by the state of California’s Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) that meet the updated competencies required for CLAD certification of K–12 teachers. You must be a credentialed teacher and complete this 13-unit program to meet the requirements for an English Learner authorization via CLAD certification.

You may take individual courses in this program for academic credit, however, you must complete the entire program to satisfy requirements for the CLAD through CTEL certification.

Required Courses

Free Orientation
CTEL 0: Orientation: CLAD through CTEL (0.2 ceu)
July 1
This orientation is required for certification. Gain a clear understanding of the CLAD through CTEL certification program, including its scope and goals, requirements, standards, and the procedures that affect competencies and field experience.

CTEL 1: Culture and Inclusion, X374.A (3 units)
Examine culture, cultural diversity, and the relationship to academic achievement, development, implementation, and evaluation of culturally inclusive instruction. Topics include cultural concepts and perspectives; cultural contact; cultural diversity in California and the United States; cross-cultural interaction; the roles of culture in the classroom and the school; culturally inclusive learning environments; family and community involvement; and culturally inclusive curriculum and instruction.

CTEL 2: Language and Language Development, X374.B (3 units)
Gain research-based conceptual understanding of language systems, structures, forms, functions, and variations of both oral and written language forms. You learn about language functions and variations and how discourse and pragmatics can be applied directly to assess and instruct English learners. You also learn about the specific linguistic and socio-linguistic challenges of English learners.

CTEL 3: Assessment of English Learners, X374.C (2 units)
Learn the principles and design of standards-based assessments and instruction for English language learners and the relationship to identification of students’ strengths and needs in English language/ literacy development and academic achievement.

CTEL 4: Foundations and Methods of English Language/Literacy Development and Content Instruction, SDAIE X374.D (4 units)
Explore current research-based theories of second-language acquisition and the differences between the first and second language and literacy development. Topics include cognitive, linguistic, socio-cultural and affective factors that affect language learning in children of diverse backgrounds; use of the California English Language Development standards and the English Language Development Test (CELDT) in instructional planning that promotes both language development and academic achievement; and research-based approaches and methods for English language development in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing as they relate to communicative competence.

CTEL P: Portfolio, X374.P (1 unit)
Capture learning and field experiences from each of the courses and learn to connect them together in a cohesive manner. All CLAD candidates must complete a CTEL portfolio that documents their experiences, including organized reflections and evidence of knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Completion of Program

The certificate can be completed in six weeks (195 hours of classroom instruction) from July 1 through August 14, 2009. You must then apply for your CTEL certification through the Education Department at UC Berkeley Extension. A bachelor’s degree or a second language is also required. Details are at www.ctc.ca.gov.
