Computer Information Systems: Analysis and Design

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, three of the fastest
growing IT professions in the next five years will be database
administrators, computer specialists, and system analysts. If you are
seeking a successful career in any of these fields, this challenging
certificate program is for you. This program is especially beneficial
for those with degrees in nontechnical or business fields who want to
join the computer information systems work force or wish to augment
their current degree (or career) with computer and information system
skills.
Successfully completing this curriculum enables you to:
- write robust computer programs using the universal C programming language;
- utilize the power of the UNIX Operating system;
- identify, define, and design database and data communications applications;
- examine issues about data security, integrity, contention, and recovery;
- develop information systems plans and proposals;
- make knowledgeable decisions on the design, purchase,
integration, and use of data communication equipment, computer
hardware, and software
Program prerequisites
You should have two years of business work experience with a foundation in
information systems or IT and familiarity with a programming language. Some
college-level coursework or equivalent experience in accounting, math or statistics,
finance, and management is recommended.
Requirements
This certificate is earned by satisfactory completion of six required
courses, equaling a minimum of 16 semester units and 240 hours. All coursework
must be completed within three years. All courses are given for academic credit.
A cumulative 3.0 grade point average is required to earn the certificate; each
course must be completed with a grade of C or better. A Certificate with Distinction
is awarded to those who complete the sequence with a 3.5 grade point average
or better.

Substitution of courses
Certificate candidates may petition to make a substitution for one course in
the certificate sequence. The substitute course must be equivalent in subject
matter and credit, and must have been completed within the past five years with
a grade of B or higher at an accredited college or university. For more information

Registration Procedure
We recommend that you register for the certificate program before you begin your third course in the program. To register, please (1) complete and submit the
Program Registration Form or (2) print out and complete the form at
www.unex.berkeley.edu/info/cert.php. Mail or fax it as it indicates, and include the nonrefundable registration fee. Use EDP #122028.
