72-HOUR SERIES

Child and Adolescent Treatment

Children and adolescents have unique issues that require treatment tailored to their specific emotional needs, developmental issues, and family circumstances. The Professional Program in Child and Adolescent Treatment offers a series of advanced and topical workshops designed to help mental health professionals stay current in their work with children, adolescents, and their families. This program offers participants the opportunity to obtain CEUs and a certificate of completion in this specialized area of practice.

To complete the professional program and earn a certificate of completion, the minimum amount of hours is 72.

Required Workshops

A range of electives is also offered each semester by outstanding researchers and clinicians in the field, allowing students to specialize in age-specific practice, selected methods of intervention, or common presenting problems. All participants are also strongly encouraged to take at least one workshop on psychological testing and/or cross-cultural practice with children and families.

Electives

*This program does not require an application or a certificate program fee. When you have completed the program call (510) 643-3883 to request your certificate.

This professional program is primarily intended for licensed clinicians (psychologists, LCSWs, MFTs, and RNs).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fill out a formal application to either enter the program or receive a certificate on completion?
No. In order to begin the program, simply enroll in your first workshop and continue taking them each term until you have completed the 72 hours of coursework. Be sure to indicate on the Extension course roster that you wish to receive CE credit for the course. This will trigger a record of your attendance. When you have completed the program, please call (510) 643-6901 to request your certificate.

How does the Professional Program in Child and Adolescent Treatment prepare professionals?
Workshops in this program provide an update on clinical skills and approaches to working with children and adolescents in a variety of settings. Courses are aimed at helping professionals stay current with the growing field of practice and become better clinicians in their work with children, youth, and their families.

What are the benefits of completing the program?
Participants will gain an understanding of current issues in the field of child and adolescent treatment and will be better able to make more informed diagnoses, assessments, referrals, etc. in their current practice. Participants can also earn continuing education units while focusing their course of study in their clinical work with this population.

Who is eligible to take the courses in this program?
Although there are no specific degree or course requirements for this series of workshops, it is primarily intended for health and mental health professionals who have a graduate degree in a related field and are licensed nurses, psychologists, clinical social workers, or marriage and family therapists. Other professionals, such as child and young adult librarians, teachers, child care professionals, school counselors, etc. are also welcome to enroll in this program.

How many courses will I need to take in order to earn a certificate?
The minimum number of hours to earn a certificate is 72 hours. There are two required workshops (Treatments That Work: Evidence-Based Psychotherapy for Children and Adolescents and Psychiatric Disorders in Children and Adolescents: Diagnostic Evaluation and Treatment) that add up to 24 hours of CE credit. You can then choose up to 48 hours from an array of elective workshops that add up to a total of 72 hours to complete the program.

How long does it take to complete the program?
The program can be completed at your own pace. It will take a minimum of three semesters (one year) to complete the program; however, the various workshops can be taken over the course of several years.

How much does it cost to complete the program?
The cost of the program is approximately $2,000. Each class is paid for separately at the time of enrollment. Because the course fees may vary from semester to semester, this is only an estimate.

Should the courses be taken in a particular order?
Although electives can be taken in any order, we encourage starting with one of the two required workshops before enrolling in other electives.

Where are the courses held? On what days are the courses held?
Courses for this program are held in Berkeley and at both Extension Centers in San Francisco, and are held on a Friday or a Saturday. Please check the schedule each semester for exact time and location.

Once I obtain a certificate on completion of the program, how will this affect my career and income?
This program allows clinicians to focus their learning in their work with this population and list the completion of this certificate program from UC Berkeley Extension on their resume and in job applications. Participants in the program are able to earn 7.2 UC Berkeley Extension ceu (72 hours of continuing education credit) specializing their professional development work in the area of child and adolescent treatment. While it does not prepare clinicians to be licensed or certified child therapists, it does allow treatment professionals to focus their learning in their work with this population and can help determine the kinds of clients they see in their practice, as well as the types of referrals they might give or receive. The value added to a clinician's career and/or income by participating in this series of courses depends on the skills/interests of the individual participant and the setting in which s/he works.
