Business Administration

The Certificate Program in Business Administration introduces the fundamental concepts and practices of business administration as preparation for a rewarding business career or advanced study.

The program offers a quick and efficient way to develop a broad-based practical understanding of business administration, its context, its purpose, and its underlying functional areas. It will benefit you if you are:

  1. contemplating or undertaking a career transition into a position that requires business knowledge
  2. preparing to launch your own enterprise
  3. or seeking preparation for a master's degree program in business.
The Business Administration Certificate Program offers three concentrations—Business Essentials, M.B.A. Foundation, and International Business—designed to meet these goals. All three concentrations employ materials and techniques that are consistent with modern principles and best practices across the various business functional disciplines, in order to provide knowledge and skills that can be used immediately.

The Business Administration program offers the advantage of a curriculum overseen by an Advisory Board of business and education leaders, approved by UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, and taught by working professionals with many years of practical business experience.

Business Essentials Concentration

The Business Essentials concentration offers an integrated sequence of courses that provides a broad and practical foundation in business administration. It is intended for anyone who The Business Essentials curriculum consists of six required courses and one elective course for a total of 15 semester units, or 225 hours of instruction:

M.B.A. Foundation Concentration

The M.B.A. Foundation concentration serves as preparation for students who are considering applying to an M.B.A. program but have little or no academic background in business. This program is designed to The M.B.A. Foundation curriculum consists of five required courses and one elective course for a total of 16 or 17 semester units (240 or 255 hours of instruction):

International Business Concentration

The International Business concentration offers an integrated sequence of courses that provides a broad and practical foundation in the principles of business administration as practiced in a multinational setting. It is intended for those who The International Business Concentration curriculum consists of five required courses and two elective courses for a total of 15 semester units, or 225 hours of instruction:

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for the Certificate Program in Business Administration.

To begin the certificate program

We recommend that you start the program with Essentials of Business X406.6 (for the Business Essentials or M.B.A. Foundation concentration) or International Business Management X495.1 (for the International Business Management concentration).

Registration Procedure

We recommend that you register for the certificate program before you begin your third course in the program. To register, please (1) complete and submit the Program Registration Form or (2) print out and complete the form at www.unex.berkeley.edu/info/cert.php. Mail or fax it as it indicates, and include the nonrefundable registration fee.

Requirements may be updated based on new developments in the field of study; we recommend completing the program in a timely fashion.

Substitution of courses

Certificate candidates may petition to substitute up to two courses for a maximum of four semester units. The substituted courses must be equivalent in subject matter and credits and must have been completed at an accredited college or university. Substituted courses must have been taken during the past five years with an earned grade of B or better. UC Berkeley Extension must approve substitutions in writing. Transcripts and course descriptions must support substitution requests.

To petition for a substitution, the student must send a written request to the address below, enclosing a course description or outline and a copy of an unofficial transcript.

UC Berkeley Extension courses taken through either classroom or online format may be counted toward fulfillment of certificate requirements.

Grading Policy

All courses must be taken for a letter grade. A certificate is awarded to those who successfully complete all required units with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher. Certificate requirements must be completed within five years of enrollment in the first required course. All credit courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher. A certificate with distinction is awarded to those who complete the program with a UC Berkeley Extension grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Credit Transfer

If you wish to apply course credit from UC Berkeley Extension to degree programs, please note that acceptance of transfer credit is always at the discretion of the accepting institution.
