Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies

This program has been developed by
UC Berkeley Extension in association with
the UC Berkeley School of Public Health.
It is designed for
- people working in the field who wish to upgrade their skills and become CAADAC
counselors
- licensed counselors, psychotherapists,
physicians, and nurses who want to learn more about the field
- recovering people who want to become
counselors
- career changers and other interested individuals
It is not necessary to undertake the entire certificate program to participate in individual courses.
Instructors and curriculum
Instructors in the program have extensive training and experience and represent a variety of
professions and backgrounds. The curriculum is based on a developmental sequence of study
designed to challenge your current beliefs about the problem of drug and alcohol abuse, increase
your knowledge, and augment your skills.

Program requirements
A total of 323 hours of college-level coursework is required to earn the certificate.
A total of 303 hours of college-level, academic credit coursework is required to earn the certificate plus 20 hours of electives.
The curriculum consists of 12 required courses, plus the elective courses.
The first level provides a thorough grounding in the biomedical, cultural, historical, and
psychological aspects of chemical dependency. The second level covers the knowledge and basic
skills needed to work effectively in the field. The third level integrates the material covered in
Levels I and II, adds to that material with instruction on various interventions, and gives you
practical experience in developing and refining counseling skills. Students are expected to complete all courses within a level (in any order) before proceding to the next level.

We recommend that you register for the certificate program before you begin your third course in the program. To register, please (1) complete and submit the

Requirements may be updated based on new developments in the field of study; we recommend completing the program in a timely fashion.
