Petro Politics: Untangling the Roots of Discontent
The quest for oil has shaped the development of the modern Middle East and contributed to both regional and global conflicts. This course takes up the economic, political, and social effects of Middle Eastern oil and the role of the United States. After an overview of global oil markets, the history of oil in the Middle East, and the formation and policies of OPEC, the course focuses on a case study of Saudi Arabia and Iran, OPEC's largest producers.
