Teaching Geometry with The Geometer’s Sketchpad

This online, moderated course instructs in the use of The Geometer’s Sketchpad software for teaching mathematics, particularly high school geometry. In addition to instruction in how to use the software, the course offers you pedagogical guidance on how to use Sketchpad in your classroom, and promotes a discussion of how dynamic geometry affects the teaching and learning of mathematics.

MELISSA BURKHEAD has been teaching high school mathematics for thirteen years. Her varied experience includes five years in Mexico City, two years in El Paso public schools, three years in the Austin magnet school program, and three years in the Episcopal school system. She currently teaches geometry and BC Calculus to techno-savvy students at St. Andrew's Episcopal School, a wireless, laptop campus. In addition to classroom teaching, she presents for the College Board and Key Curriculum Press, and contributes to curriculum development for high school educators associated with the University of Texas at Austin.
CHRIS MONAHAN, M.A.T., has been teaching high school mathematics in New York for over 30 years. He also has over 20 years of experience teaching at the college level, including four years preparing pre-service teachers to use technology effectively in the classroom. Monahan is a T3 National Instructor, is a presenter for the College Board, and has been using Geometer's Sketchpad for more than 15 years.

She is the recipient of the National Board Certification in Adolescent and Young Adulthood Mathematics and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. In addition, she has presented nationally for 14 years at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics as well as at the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics. She currently teaches high school mathematics at Norview High School, Norfolk Public Schools, where she teaches AP Statistics, Algebra II, and Geometry, and has been a team leader for five years.
STEVE LARSEN is a high school mathematics teacher at Century High School in Rochester, Minnesota. His prior experience includes teaching mathematics in Ewa Beach, Hawaii and in Brandon, Minnesota. In recent years, his focus has been on teaching geometry and he has begun to implement Geometer's Sketchpad as a teaching tool.
ELIZABETH HICKS, B.S., earned her bachelor's degree in mathematics from Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. She has over twenty years of experience teaching mathematics at the high school and college level and is the mathematics chairperson at her school. She has taught with the Geometer's Sketchpad for many years and incorporates technology into her lessons on a regular basis.

WILLIAM CURTIS JAMES, M.A., is a professional mathematics teacher dedicated to lifelong learning for both students and adults. He earned his degree from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and has many years of experience instructing geometry and The Geometer’s Sketchpad.
REBECCA BREWER GREENFELD, B.S., M.A., holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a master's in the art of teaching. She has been using these degrees to successfully teach at the high school and adult education levels. Her philosophy is to include technology as a method of diversifying the mathematics curriculum and assist students in gaining a better understanding of mathematical concepts.
PAUL WELCH, M.S.E., is a second career mathematics teacher who had a previous life as a technology sales professional. He earned his degrees from State University New York at Potsdam, and IONA College. He currently teaches high school in Stamford, Connecticut, where he resides with his wife and two daughters. Integrating technology (especially The Geometer's Sketchpad) into the curriculum and fractals are his top interests.
