Project Management for Technical Communicators

An elective in the Certificate Program and Professional Sequence in Technical CommunicationTechnical communicators are often expected to manage their own projects or work with others to meet team goals for deliverables, deadlines, and budgets. Nowadays, technical communication project managers are expected to manage resources that may be dispersed around the country or even the world. In this course, technical communicators learn the fundamentals of project management and how they apply to technical communication projects such as documentation and proposal development. Students discuss current approaches to project management and develop individual project management plans.

PATRICIA EGAN, B.A., has worked in technical and financial communications since 1992. In her previous career, she worked in nonprofit fundraising for organizations including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York Botanical Garden, and New York City Partnership. She has managed complex projects in professional and technical communications, meeting critical deadlines for her clients in biotech, financial services, IT, telecommunications, and transportation. She served as a judge for the Touchstone 2002 Awards, Society for Technical Communication, Northern California Region. She is a member of the Society for Technical Communication, Council of Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication, and American Society for Information Science and Technology. She holds a bachelor of arts degree from UC Berkeley, with graduate work completed at New Jersey Institute of Technology.Revised class schedule in red.
