Fundamentals of Construction Law
X440 (2 semester units in IDS-Civil Engineering and Law)
A requirement in the Certificate Program in Construction ManagementConstruction professionals should be thoroughly familiar with the legal aspects of a construction project, as disputes and claims inevitably arise. This course is designed to familiarize engineers, architects, project managers, developers, and contractors with the variety of legal issues affecting the construction industry and to provide an overview of the foundational rights, statutes, case law, and legal obligations relating to the construction industry. California construction law is emphasized.
Major topics include contractor license law, project bidding and bonding, construction contracts, liens, insurance, and alternative dispute resolution. On completion of this course, a construction professional should understand, in a broad sense, the legal aspects of a construction project and should be able to identify issues and legal problems as they arise.
