Introduction to Geriatric Neuropsychology and Long-Term Care
(1.2 ceu)
12 hours CE credit: BRN, LCSW/MFT, and psychologists
An elective in the Professional Program in Neuropsychological Assessment and the Professional Program in Aging and Mental HealthGiven changing population demographics and the evolving healthcare system, neuropsychologists and other mental health professionals are increasingly involved in working with older patients. With possible changes in the healthcare industry, specifically with regard to geriatric practice, professionals find themselves working more often within systems emphasizing management of care. Thus, there is a growing need to have knowledge of normative and pathological changes in the elderly and current information about assessment and intervention methods in long-term care.
This workshop provides an overview of geriatric neuro-psychology, including presentation and demonstration of various assessment and intervention approaches, with discussion, as time permits, of issues related to competency/capacity, advance directives, and the role of neuropsychology and clinical psychology in the long-term-care environment. The collaborative relationship of neuropsychology with other disciplines is also discussed, emphasizing the goal of enhanced patient care.
This course is appropriate for licensed clinicians, students in clinical mental-health programs, or others with consent of the instructor, and meets and exceeds the 10-hour pre-licensure requirement in aging and long-term care.
