The Business of Biotechnology
(0.5 ceu)
An elective in the Professional Sequence in Biotechnology Business and MarketingThis course is designed to give you a quick view of the thrills and chills of the biotechnology industry--what makes it so compelling, and what makes it one of the riskiest sectors for investors. You hear about some of the innovative entrepreneurs who created this industry back in the late 1970s, when everyone insisted it wasn't possible to start new pharmaceutical companies. You learn about the risks they took and how the value they generated surpassed even that of dot-com successes.
You also get a guided tour of the mysteries of the drug development process and the convoluted funding trail from venture capital through that all-important initial public offering (IPO); a tutorial in why biotech stocks behave the way they do; and a checklist for picking out companies most likely to succeed.
Hundreds of new biotech projects begun in the last decade are poised to power their way into the marketplace. This explosion should fuel opportunities for investors and employees alike, and all segments of society will benefit from the products. You will see why biotech's Golden Age lies ahead.
