Editorial Workshop I: Introduction to Copyediting
X405 (2 semester units in Journalism)
A requirement in the Professional Sequence in EditingIntended for those who have completed Grammar, Mechanics, and Usage for Editors, this beginning copyediting course presents an overview of the editorial process and the basic tools and tasks of copyeditors, including the use of style manuals and reference books, creation of style sheets, and methods of querying authors and project editors. Students learn how to edit using conventional marks and symbols, apply the appropriate level of copyediting, eliminate bias, query permissions, ensure consistency, typecode a manuscript, and copyedit and insert figures, tables, and artwork. Enrollment is limited.
Prerequisite: A grade of C or higher in Grammar, Mechanics, and Usage for Editors X445 (formerly Practical Grammar for Writers and Editors X445) or equivalent course and consent of instructor.

KATHLEEN CUBLEY, B.A., has been in the publishing world for more than 14 years, and is the director of editorial and production for The Mountaineers Books. She began her career as a copy editor for the student newspaper at Washington State University, and after graduation, became an editorial assistant at the educational publisher Totline Publications, now a part of McGraw-Hill. At Totline she moved through the editorial department, with stops as a magazine article editor, book editor, writer, and finally managing editor. After nine years at Totline, Cubley moved on to managing editor at The Mountaineers Books, where she worked with authors, editors, and proofreaders to shepherd projects from manuscript to bound book. Currently, she oversees the editorial and production staff and manages the printing at The Mountaineers Books. Her experience includes writing books, magazine articles, and brochures; editing; project management; training freelancers in copy editing and proofreading methods; teaching at the University of Washington Extension in the editing program; and mentoring beginning editors and project managers. She has also run her own freelance editorial services business.

VICI CASANA, M.A., has worked as a freelance copyeditor and developmental editor for 14 years, primarily for Houghton Mifflin Co. She was previously an instructor at Northeastern University, where she taught writing and literature courses and developed and taught Grammar for Journalists, the prerequisite for newswriting courses. She has also worked as a proofreader, indexer, and newspaper reporter.
