The course makes the case for the mystery novel's status as a significant form of modern fiction, one that explores how human consciousness makes sense out of what might otherwise be viewed as random experience and meaningless violence.

MARY ANN KOORY, Ph.D., is a writer and teacher specializing in English literature and Renaissance poetry. She received her doctorate in English literature from UC Berkeley.
