Textiles and the World of Interior Designers
X400.1 (1 semester unit in Architecture)
Fabric and fine furnishings form the core of elegant rooms, and one of the cornerstones of interior design is understanding textiles. The designer needs to know how to correctly use different fabrics and how they are created, manufactured, and marketed.
In this course, Barbara Beckmann shares insights into the culture of interior design and her vast experience and knowledge (spanning 30 years) of how the industry functions. You learn about textiles from the naturals to the man-mades, their myriad of uses, their limitations, and how to specify extraordinary textiles for creating extraordinary interiors.
You visit Barbara Beckmann's showroom in San Francisco and her renowned factory in Napa. You see how the textiles used everywhere--from the Hotel du Cap Ferrat in France, the Royal Palace in Thailand, and the Sheraton Grand in Tokyo to the Mirage, Golden Nugget, and Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas--are conceived and put into production. Beckmann's clients and friends include many prominent architects, designers, and developers.
