Illustrating Children's Books

To become a children's book illustrator, you need skill, style, technique, and a sense of how to tell a story through pictures. This overview of the field of children's book illustration enables you to develop an effective portfolio for introducing your work to publishers. The instructor discusses how to develop an illustration style, technique, and media. The course also covers book production from idea to publication.

SARA GILLINGHAM, M.Des., is an art director specializing in children's books and products, and has been the head of the children's design department at Chronicle Books since 2004. She holds a bachelor of fine arts from the University of British Columbia and a master of design from the Glasgow School of Art. She has worked with a wide variety of talented illustrators on award-winning projects.
