Principles of Publication Design
X405 (2 semester units in Design)
This course emphasizes typography and page composition, including grid layout and the principles of contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity. Through lectures, hands-on projects, and classroom critiques, you learn the process used in designing books, brochures, magazines, periodicals, and collateral pieces. The course also covers writing design specifications and copy-fitting. Guest speakers from the local design community give presentations of their work. Students must have access to Quark or InDesign.

NANCY CUTLER, B.S., principal at Midnight Oil Design, Oakland, is a graphic communications and publication designer. In 1989, she became creative director for several Bay Area publishing companies while retaining a few private clients. Clients include BPI Publications' Shoot and Billboard magazines, Woman's Day Special Interest Publications, Publishers Weekly, and CBS.
