Teaching Pronunciation as a Communicative Skill

The objective of this course is to show teachers how to incorporate pronunciation into the ESL curriculum. It presents a description of American English pronunciation, including stress, rhythm, intonation, and consonants and vowels. The course also explores the linguistic and psychological factors affecting communicative clarity.
Participants compare different teaching solutions to specific pronunciation problems and learn practical techniques for creating lively and effective pronunciation lessons. Tutoring is required as part of the homework.

CAROL LETHABY, M.A. in TESOL, has been in the field of English language teaching as a teacher, teacher educator, consultant, and materials writer since 1986. She has lived and worked in the United Kingdom, Austria, France, Greece, and Mexico. She is involved in both local and distance teacher education projects, and is coauthoring a textbook series for adult ESL learners.
