Planting Design
X401 (3 semester units in Landscape Architecture)
Plants are an important expressive design medium. After an overview of the history of planting in environmental design, this studio course focuses on the design process: site analysis, client/user analysis, and schematic design. It presents the concepts of plant massing, scale, space, proportion, color, texture, light, scent, illusion, and seasonal changes. Participants prepare planting plans based on these concepts. Several field trips to both residential and commercial gardens are scheduled.
Prerequisites: Principles and Elements of Design X412.1; Landscape Graphics I X15; Landscape Graphics II X17; Spring X444 or Summer X445 Plants and Applications; Autumn Plants and Applications X446; Gardens, Parks, and Urban Open Spaces I X416 and II X418; and Studio L1: Environmental Design X116.
