Self-Paced Study in Calculus X1A-S
X1A-S (1-4 semester units)
This course provides an introduction to differential and integral calculus of functions of one variable, with applications.
Important Note: To understand how a self-paced mathematics course works, you should first read the section on
Self-Paced Mathematics Course Structure and Policies. Math 1A-S covers the same material as the lecture-style Math 1A, and uses the same text. The only difference is in the method of instruction. In Math 1A-S and Math 1B-S there are no lectures; however, the individual pacing allows the student greater flexibility. Students work independently and come to class when they have questions or are ready to be tested. Math 1B-S is offered by Extension in the self-paced program only.
The Math 1A-B sequence is intended for students in mathematics, engineering and mathematical economics. It is required also for undergraduate or graduate degrees in computer science. Because of the amount of detail and mathematical theory included, it is more difficult and may take up to twice as long to complete as the Math 16A-B sequence. Applications studied are in science and engineering whereas applications in the Math 16A-B sequence are primarily in business and biological sciences.
However, Math 1A-B provides a strong mathematical background for applications in any area. Three units of Math 1A-S satisfies the admission requirements of the UC Berkeley MBA programs as does three units of Math 16A-S.
