Introduction to Statistics
XB2 (4 semester units in Statistics)
Approved as a prerequisite to the Haas School of Business Evening and Weekend M.B.A. Program. Important: Special academic policies apply to XB courses.This course covers basic concepts of probability and statistical inference, focusing on an intuitive approach to understanding concepts and methodologies. It introduces statistical/critical thinking, including the uses and abuses of statistics, descriptive statistics, probability, sampling distributions, interval estimation, hypothesis testing, and regression. The online course is the recipient of the Helen Williams Award for Excellence in Collegiate Independent Study from the American Association for Collegiate Independent Study (AACIS).

Prerequisites: Two years of high school algebra. A recent course in college algebra is recommended.

G. JAMES PAN, Ph.D., was a faculty member at Oakland University from 1994 to 2001 and was awarded an associate professorship of statistics with tenure in 2000. He visited the Department of Statistics at UC Berkeley in 2001 as a University Visiting Scholar. He is currently working as a biostatistician on clinical trials. Dr. Pan has researched, published, and taught broadly in the fields of statistics and biostatistics. He has been an invited speaker at national and international statistics conferences and departmental and company seminars. He was a co-organizer of several professional conferences and served as a referee for more than 10 statistical journals.
