LINDA R. THOMPSON, M.A., has alternated between writing and editing projects during her career, and feels that she is not wearing different hats but perhaps the same hat turned inside out. When she worked in the Bay Area as manager of publications and training for an engineering company, she developed a technical writing course with the goal of making engineers such good writers that they would no longer need editors. For about eight years in the 1970s and 1980s, she taught this course at various locations around the West.
Later, as a freelancer, Thompson was managing editor of two company newsletters, published articles in newspapers and magazines, and worked on a novel. During the 1990s, she wrote website copy for emerging dot-coms, transformed data from spreadsheets into client reports for a management consultant, and edited PowerPoint presentations for an e-learning company, among other projects. When the century turned the corner, Thompson and her husband packed everything except their worn-out hats and moved to Taos, New Mexico.
She has clients in Taos, Florida, Texas, and San Francisco. In four years she has written 20 children's books on American history, proofread and edited books in English and Spanish, published articles, edited brochures, and written website copy. Each year brings new surprises and she happily returns this year to teaching, a hat she wears close to her heart.
Thompson has a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Washington, a standard secondary teaching credential from UCLA, and a master's degree in English/creative writing from San Francisco State University.
