Meets the requirement of training in spousal/partner abuse for relicensure in California by the Board of Psychology and the Board of Behavioral SciencesDomestic violence is widespread throughout our society. It is a hidden problem that causes victims to suffer in silence. After a brief review of the history of violence in our culture and the extent of the problem, this one-day workshop offers an overview of intervention and treatment strategies. An overview of partner battering and profiles of the victim and batterer are presented.
Domestic violence occurs in all cultures and socioeconomic groups, as well as in same-sex relationships. Children are deeply affected by violence in the family. A review of the different types of child abuse and the effects of domestic violence on children is presented, as well as special considerations of the impact of trauma on different family members. The effects on the clinician of working with violence, and self-care, are also discussed.
