Culturally Informed Treatment for Anxiety Disorders
(0.6 ceu)
6 hours CE credit: BRN, LCSW/MFT, and psychologists
An elective workshop in the Professional Program in the Treatment of Anxiety DisordersSeveral lines of research have supported the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety disorders. Treatment typically incorporates strategies that help patients gain more adaptive perspectives about themselves and the actual dangers posed by situations they fear. Within Western contexts, views that promote a sense of self-efficacy and increase self-awareness are encouraged. Such views, however, are inconsistent with the social norms of many other cultures. This workshop provides an empirical review of cultural differences and highlights specific ways cultural factors may be incorporated into cognitive-behavioral treatments for anxiety.
