NEW THIS TERM

Jump Start: Building Java Enterprise Applications with Spring, Hibernate, and Seam

X446.6 (2 semester units in EECS)

The landscape of Java Enterprise Applications has changed dramatically; with newer nimbler frameworks including Spring (an alternative to Enterprise JavaBeans), Hibernate (for RDBMS to Object mapping), and the unifying Seam framework substituting for J2EE. These modern tools bring considerable benefits for most projects, improving development efficiency, real time execution, test coverage, and application quality. This course gives students a "jump-start" in using Spring, Hibernate, and Seam by working through application examples. Developing, debugging, and testing techniques make use of common productivity tools, including Eclipse (with its rich client platform), Tomcat (an application server), and cross-platform project builders such as ANT and Maven. Course topics include providing "transparent" dependency injection, automated object-RDBMS mapping for domain model objects, creating "conversational" context to weave together Web interactions, as well as remotable instances, Web services, e-mail, and scheduling.
