Hands-On Planning for Environmental Monitoring

(0.7 ceu)

(Formerly Hands-On Water Quality Monitoring)

An elective in the Certificate Program in California Water Management and Ecosystem Restoration

The course expands on the previous segment (Water Quality Monitoring Design) to include hands-on exercises for selected steps in the process of planning a water quality monitoring project. Participants formulate (or are provided with) a specific monitoring study question, and apply guidance documents, systematic planning tools, templates, and checklists to develop the core parts of a monitoring plan. Group exercises tailor monitoring design to monitoring intent.

Prerequisites: Completion of the UC Berkeley Extension two-day course Water Quality Monitoring Design, (preferably the day prior to this course). Technical background (preferably in biology, ecology, and/or chemistry), understanding of processes that affect water quality, understanding of a watershed as a functional unit.
