Beyond the Five-Paragraph Essay: Teaching Academic Writing Without Formulas
Writing essays based on a formula does not encourage students to think critically and write effectively. This comprehensive course provides English teachers with techniques critical to teaching and improving students' academic essay writing without relying on formulas. Teachers will complete the course with materials and grade-appropriate lesson plans developed to teach writing strategies to middle and high school students.

LORETTA KANE, Ph.D., is a supervisor/lecturer in the MUSE graduate program at UC Berkeley and teaches academic literacy and English composition at the San Francisco Art Institute and literary development at San Jose State University. Her research on the teaching of writing, academic literacy, and cognition has been presented at professional conferences in California and New York. Dr. Kane has a master's degree in language studies from San Francisco State and a Ph.D. in education from UC Berkeley. She is a former high school English teacher dedicated to putting research into current practice.NOTE: This class is closed. For information about related courses, contact your academic department.
