HVAC Control and Energy Management Systems
X473 (2 semester units in Mechanical Engineering)
A requirement in the Certificate Program in HVACThis course provides the practicing engineer, designer, and building operation engineer with a working knowledge of the principles involved in the selection and design of temperature controls for HVAC systems. Topics include controls theory and fundamentals; pneumatic, electric, electronic, and computer-based hardware; control application for zones; air handlers; and chilled-water and hot-water systems. On completing the course, you should be able to specify and design control systems for normal applications.

MARK HYDEMAN, M.S., PE, is a principal at Taylor Engineering, Alameda. He has more than 15 years of experience in the design and commissioning of HVAC and control systems for commercial buildings. Hydeman is the author of ASHRAE's professional development series course Retrofitting Direct Digital Controls.
Mark Hydeman and Steve Taylor have extensive practical experience with the design and commissioning of control systems. Together, they have designed and commissioned more than 30 projects representing 15 distinct product lines. Their customers include Oracle Corporation, Symantec Corporation, UC Merced, Stanford University, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, and the State of California.
STEVE T. TAYLOR, M.S., PE, is the founding principal of Taylor Engineering, Alameda. He specializes in energy-efficient HVAC and control system design and has more than 25 years of commercial and industrial design experience. He was one of the primary authors of the HVAC sections of ASHRAE Standard 90.1 energy conservation standard and California's Title 24 energy standards. He was also the primary author of ASHRAE's Fundamentals of HVAC Control Systems course. Taylor is an ASHRAE Fellow.Revised class schedule in red.
