Urban Dirt: Designing Sustainable Landscapes On-Structure
X411.6 (2 semester units in Architecture)
Urban Dirt is an exploration into the design of urban landscapes on-structure, those built on an assemblage of constructed ground created by architectural and engineering systems such as roofs, roads, and bridges. As land becomes a more scarce and valuable resource in our cities, we must expand our vision for the urban landscape. These evolving landscape typologies are an untapped potential for our cities, offering us a new ground plane from which to construct places that enhance the urban environment. By applying sustainable design principles, students are challenged to take an operational approach to these hybrid landscapes, focusing on what these sites do, rather that what they are. Topics include traditions of building landscapes on structures, including green roofs; on-structure plazas, and podium decks; sustainable design opportunities such as stormwater management and urban heat island mitigation; construction methods; as well as case studies and current trends. This is a design project- and research-based course supplemented by lectures and readings.

JESSE MARKMAN, M.L.A., ASLA, is a landscape architect with Sasaki Associates, Inc., an international multi-disciplinary design firm. He holds a master's degree in landscape architecture and a bachelor of arts degree in botany and scientific illustration. His project experience includes landscape architecture and urban design, ecological sustainability, green roofs, urban botany, recreation planning, and transportation design.
MEGHAN QUINN, MLA, MUEP, is a landscape architect with professional experience in the Bay Area, working with Sasaki Associates and Hargreaves Associates. Her design and research interests comprise a critical investigation and development of hybrid landscape typologies that evolve from the liminal territory between architecture and landscape, and construction and ecology.
