Rococo to Revolution: Art of the Eighteenth Century
X406.1 (2 semester units in Art History)
Artistic culture in the Age of Enlightenment--the cradle of modernity--encompassed a variety of interests and approaches. The paintings and drawings of Watteau, Tiepolo, Boucher, Chardin, Greuze, Hogarth, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Hubert Robert, Fragonard, Goya, and David will be studied in the context of eighteenth-century developments in theory, architecture, sculpture, decorative arts, garden design, and printmaking. Reconstructing the circumstances which influenced the artists' professional lives, we will appreciate their individual contributions to the stylistic movements of rococo and neoclassicism.
