This course explores some of the fundamental facets of the history and culture of modern India. By focusing on political history, religious traditions, and the varied geography of India, the course provides a framework for understanding Indian civilization and relating this knowledge to the political and social challenges in modern Indian society.

ALICE W. CLARK, Ph.D., is a Visiting Scholar at the Center for South Asia Studies, UC Berkeley, with a doctorate in comparative world history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and has done postdoctoral work in demography at UC Berkeley. She has taught South Asian history at Santa Clara University, De Anza College, and Notre Dame de Namur University. She frequently leads cultural tours of India for small groups.
Dr. Clark's research on women in India utilizes perspectives from history, demography, sociology and anthropology. Her latest article, authored together with T.V. Sekher and appearing in Gender, Technology and Development, is entitled "Can Career-Minded Young Women Reverse Gender Discrimination? A View from Bangalore's High-Tech Sector." She plans further research on how globalization is conditioning the opportunities available to young women living in several cities of India.
