Epic Encounters: Oral, Written, and Cinematic
X107 (2 semester units in Comparative Literature)
Never had a chance to read the classics? Now you can, and have the fun of comparing them to modern film epics. This course gives you a chance to read the ancient texts of Homer's
Odyssey and Virgil's
Aeneid side-by-side with a great epic of the twentieth century,
The Lord of the Rings. Students view film versions of the Homeric poems (
Troy,
Odyssey) and
The Lord of the Rings. We discuss the literary elements of the epic tale and consider how epics remain relevant to contemporary culture.
