Art of the Impressionists

Get a fresh perspective on Impressionism. This course illuminates the essential nature of the movement and the qualities of the artists' individual contributions. Topics include the heritage of Romantic naturalism, the concept of the avant-garde, Impressionist attitudes toward the landscape and the garden, themes of modern life,
Japonisme, technique and style, group dynamics, the Impressionist exhibitions, and critical reception. The artistic personalities of Manet, Degas, Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Morisot, Sisley, and Cassatt are brought into focus.

JOSINE SMITS, Ph.D., has taught eighteenth- and nineteenth-century art history at California College of the Arts and Stanford University. She received a master's degree from the Sorbonne and a doctorate from Stanford for a dissertation on Corot. She also was a research scholar at Tokyo University.
