Great Wines of Northern California
(1.8 ceu)
Cabernet Sauvignon stars in the Stag's Leap District of the Napa Valley, while Pinot Noir revels in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County.
It is in marriages like these of grape and place that truly great wines are born. Such matches, and the great wines that result, are the subject of this exploration of the fruit of Northern California's grape harvest. Each of the sessions investigates a different grape variety and discusses the region in which its most celebrated wines are produced. In addition to Cabernet and Pinot Noir, the course includes extensive study of Chardonnay from the Carneros, Gewürtztraminer from the Anderson Valley, Zinfandel from Fiddletown and the Shenandoah Valley, Sauvignon Blanc from Dry Creek Valley, and Cabernet- and Bordeaux-style blends from Rutherford and Oakville. Through guided, comparative tasting and discussion, you learn why these partnerships work to produce some of the world's finest and most pleasurable wines. Recommended preparation: Fundamentals of Wine Studies I.
Note: Please bring six glasses to each session.
