A requirement in the Professional Sequence in Personal Financial Planning and an elective in the Professional Sequence in Wealth ManagementThis course provides in-depth study of the tax-oriented decisions and personal considerations that constitute an effective estate plan. Lectures and discussions cover the provisions of recent federal tax legislation and its impact on estate planning. Participants analyze estate-planning objectives and prepare a plan for a hypothetical client.
Topics include the federal estate gift tax structure and application; basic property concepts; basic documents in estate planning; the marital deduction, powers of appointment, and disclaimers; gifts to reduce income and estate taxes; and charitable giving. Specialized planning for the executive (focusing on life insurance, irrevocable transfers, and qualified employee benefits), the successful business entrepreneur (emphasis on planning techniques for the closely held business, buy-sell agreements, stock redemptions, and recapitalization), and the wealthy (including generation-skipping transfers) are also covered.

Prior to joining American Express, he practiced law, working extensively with estates and corporations.
